In 2011, Joseph Ash Medway provided its market-leading galvanizing and powder coating services to protect over 100 metres of railings at Chepstow Racecourse, the home of the Welsh Grand National. In 2018, they’re still looking as good as new.

In late 2010/early 2011 architectural metalwork specialist A.W. Jeffreys was appointed to design and install a railing system for the Chepstow Racecourse’s new outdoor communal area, as well as a set of gates to be used for crowd management. To ensure the metalwork would benefit from long-term protection from the elements, the company turned to Kent-based steel finishing specialist, Joseph Ash Medway.

During the design process, A.W. Jeffreys collaborated with Joseph Ash Medway to ensure all of the fabricated elements – some as long as 3.2 metres – would be able to fit the galvanizing facility. For the project, A.W. Jeffreys produced a bespoke range of curved and straight metallic elements that were specifically designed for purpose.

Joseph Ash Medway used its own HGV fleet to collect all the steels from A.W. Jeffreys‘ manufacturing facility before delivering a one-stop-service, providing galvanizing and a white powder coating finish to the new steelwork. Joseph Ash Medway then used a HIAB lorry to deliver all the finished job to site for A.W. Jeffreys to complete the installation.

Without a galvanized coating, oxygen in the air would react and begin to corrode the untreated steel. Operating to stringent quality control processes and fully accredited to BS and ISO standards, Joseph Ash Medway’s market leading techniques provide a tough, long lasting finish that, when combined with powder coating, offers aesthetically pleasing protection that shields the railings against the elements for at least 25 years.

With a reputation built on excellence, Joseph Ash Medway specialises in providing the complete galvanising and powder coating service to a huge customer base across the South East. Completed in March 2011, the Chepstow Racecourse project stands as a perfect example of what can be achieved when a fabricator and steel finishing specialist works together.

Another October, another London Build Show completed!

Last week we exhibited at the London Build Show in Olympia. Thousands of delegates passed through the doors, and a fair share stopped by our stand.

We were pleased to share advice, guidance and knowledge about metal finishing treatments, from shot blasting, to hot dip galvanizing to powder coating.

We were also pleased to meet many of the attendees, as well as fellow exhibitors.

If you attended, we hope you had a successful visit and managed to gather lots of useful information.

We hope to see you again at the London Build Show 2019, which will be held at Olympia from 27-28 November!

Bluewater in Dartford, North Kent is one of the biggest and most popular shopping centres in all of Europe. When the £400 million centre opened in March 1999, almost 20 years ago, an intrinsic feature of the site was the bespoke metalwork balustrades finished by Kent based steel finishing specialist Joseph Ash Medway. Now, two decades on, the centre still retains its contemporary and unique design, due in large part to the quality and longevity of its finishes.

Set in a reclaimed former quarry and built complete with cinemas, shops and restaurants, the unique architecture of Bluewater sets it apart from other shopping destinations. Bluewater’s three malls are styled like canopied streets with ornamental balustrades and handrails on two floors and topped with glass sided domed roofs.

At this high-quality retail development, Joseph Ash Medway worked with architectural metalwork engineer Alan Dawson Associates on a shotblasting and powder coating solution for the balustrades that was not only in keeping with the ornate design but also ensured long term colour retention in the centre.

To provide a vibrant, durable finish, Joseph Ash Medway applied a comprehensive shot blasting and powder coating solution to the black steel. This included a zinc phosphate pre-treatment, and a two-part powder coating system beginning with a tough RAL 9006 matte undercoat and a clear coated powder lacquer to ensure the glossy appearance would not fade over time.

”Joseph Ash Medway has carried out extensive coatings packages for us over the years. Because they provide an unrivalled quality of work, and a totally reliable and ‘one stop shop’ service, we have avoided the sort of surface finishing problems we so often experienced when using a separate hot dip galvanizer and a separate polyester powder coater” said Alan Dawson of Alan Dawson Associates.

Operating to stringent quality control processes and fully accredited to all the latest BS and ISO standards, Joseph Ash Medway ensured all works were completed to the highest quality possible to provide a low maintenance finish and long-lasting performance.

With a reputation built on excellence, Joseph Ash Medway specialises in providing the complete galvanizing and steel finishing service to a broad customer base across the South East. With 24-hour operation, an expert logistics department and a modern HGV fleet, they can provide a rapid and responsive service to customers on any project, of any size.

Tim Palmer, General Manager

Joseph Ash Medway has a new General Manager. Meet Tim Palmer!

We’re pleased to announce that Joseph Ash Galvanizing has recently recruited a new General Manager for our Kent-based plant. Tim Palmer joined us in May 2018 and will run Joseph Ash Medway.

Tim has a long history in manufacturing, working for companies such as ParkerSteel, dhm Plastics, Firth Rixson, Corus and ATI Allvac. His recent roles have included Group Operations Director and UK Manufacturing Director and his experience covers concrete, plastics, metals, and building construction products. Tim has even notched-up experience working in Japan learning lean manufacturing techniques as part of a Manufacturing Technology Fellowship Programme.

Having settled into the role at Medway in the last few months, Tim has already identified changes that he’d like to make which centre around investing in new technologies and ensuring all team members on the shop floor and back office have the skills, training and equipment they need to perform their jobs well. Tim believes the right training and tools, as well as ensuring everyone feels they have a voice, ultimately leads to an excellent service and quality of product for Joseph Ash Medway customers.

We welcome Tim into the Joseph Ash Galvanizing family and look forward to seeing the plant and Medway team members thrive and seize new opportunities under his leadership.

Amazing achievements for three team members at Joseph Ash Galvanizing.

August 2018 marks some landmark achievements for three team members at Joseph Ash Galvanizing. Tracie Lockley, Collin Humphries and David Carling have each reached 20, 25 and 30 years respectively – an amazing 75 years between them!

Tracie Lockley – Deputy Divisional Manager, Joseph Ash Telford – celebrating 20 years

Tracie has been with Joseph Ash Galvanizing since 1998 when she joined our Birmingham division in the commercial department. Since that time Tracie has worked in various commercial roles for both Joseph Ash Galvanizing Birmingham and then Joseph Ash Telford, before opting for a change in direction by taking on the extremely challenging role of Works Manager at Telford in 2013. Having excelled in this role, Tracie is now Deputy Divisional Manager and is an essential member of the Telford team.

Collin Humphries – Galvanizing Operative, Joseph Ash Chesterfield – celebrating 25 years

Collin joined Joseph Ash Galvanizing as an agency worker in 1993. He has stayed with the company ever since and has worked most roles at the Joseph Ash Chesterfield plant from jigging, to hot dip galvanizing baths and acid. Since August 2014 he has been doing general site tidy up, and he now also gets to enjoy the company of his son, who also works at Joseph Ash Chesterfield.

David Carling – Divisional Manager, Joseph Ash Chesterfield – celebrating 30 years

David started at Joseph Ash Chesterfield in 1988 as QA and Maintenance Manager with environmental and health and safety responsibilities (for both the Chesterfield and Metnor plants). Before joining Joseph Ash he was an Engineering Manager at a foundry in Sunderland.

David became Technical Director at the Metnor plant in 2000 and in 2006 reverted to the role of Technical Manager. In 2010 he became Divisional Manager at Joseph Ash Chesterfield – a role he has had ever since.

From 1994 until 2006 David was also a part of the Galvanizers Association Technical Committee.

Congratulations Tracie, Collin and David for your long-time service achievements!

Walsall, Bilston, Chesterfield and Telford OHSAS membership renewals.

OHSAS is an International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. As stated by the British Assessment Bureau (the awarding body) “It provides a framework for the effective management of OH&S including all aspects of risk management and legal compliance. It addresses occupational health and safety rather than any specific product safety matters.”

OHSAS 18001 is important for the following reasons:

  • It reduces workplace hazards and boosts employee morale
  • It provides a safe environment in which to conduct operations and business
  • It is a framework for an occupational health and safety management system
  • It minimises the risk of production delays.

A number of Joseph Ash Galvanizing plants were awarded OHSAS in 2015 (Bilston, Chesterfield, Telford and Walsall), and we are pleased to say that membership has just been renewed.

Well done to the teams at Bilston, Walsall, Telford and Chesterfield for this achievement!
