It’s a marathon, not a sprint

We have a great team of people working at Joseph Ash Galvanizing, and it’s time to celebrate two such individuals.

Firstly, Manjit Singh Sanghara, who turned 65 at the beginning of November and has just completed 41 year’s service with Joseph Ash. Manjit plans to continue working with us, which is great.

Secondly, Charanjit Singh, who took part in the Birmingham marathon in mid-October at the age of 60. Charanjit completed the 13.1 mile race in just two hours and 13 minutes and raised over £1400 in charity. Well done Charanjit!

New trucks for Joseph Ash Walsall

We’re pleased to announce that Joseph Ash Walsall has just taken delivery of a new fleet of trucks, which will be used for customer collections, and deliveries. This brings our entire Walsall fleet up to four articulated vehicles and five rigid vehicles, meaning we can manage almost any collection or delivery for customers.

The trucks are Scania 250 rigid vehicles which can carry up to nine tonnes in weight, and they were sourced from Keltruck who provide a first rate service to all Joseph Ash plants in the Midlands.

Improved customer service

The new vehicles will enable Joseph Ash to continually improve our excellent levels of customer care as all vehicles are equipped with Scania fleet management data and live GPS tracking. This means that we can not only obtain data at any given time on the exact location of the trucks making customer deliveries and collections, but we can also obtain weekly and monthly data on the vehicles which include MPG, idling and speed.

Environmentally sound

The new trucks are amongst the most technologically advanced on the market and are equipped with Euro 6 engines, which means they are very environmentally friendly with improved MPG and some of the lowest CO2 emissions available.

At Joseph Ash, we’re not only pleased to be able to offer improved customer logistics and service, but we’re also proud to be doing our bit for the environment.

Did you know that Joseph Ash has nine plants across the Midlands and the South East of England? This month, we’re shining the spotlight on our plant in Telford to let you know what our staff and facilities there can offer.

The UK’s widest bath at Joseph Ash Telford

The Joseph Ash Telford plant has one of the widest galvanizing baths in Europe, and the widest bath in the UK. With an overall width of 2.1m, a length of 7.6m and a depth of 3.35m, this bath is one of the most versatile in terms of galvanizing wide objects and odd-shaped fabrications.

In recent times the bath has hot dip galvanized everything from bridge components, to staircases, and sculptures in the shape of horses. It also regularly galvanizes components for major manufacturers in the agricultural, fencing and trailer sectors.

Spin galvanizing services

As well as galvanizing large items, Joseph Ash Telford can also galvanize small parts in our spin galvanizing bath – everything from hinges, nuts, bolts, bracketry and fixings – and we are one of the most technically advanced small parts galvanizer in the UK.

The Commonwealth Games 2014 are underway, and Joseph Ash Galvanizing and The Structure Group – one of our customers – are not only taking an interest in the sports, but in the behind the scenes building work that has led to Hampden Park being the main stadium for the opening ceremony and the athletics. Why? Because we were involved!

In 2013, Glasgow 2014’s head of development, Ian McKenzie made the decision to temporarily convert Hampden Park from a football stadium to an athletics venue, ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. His decision was driven by the desire to make use of the excellent stadiums that Glasgow already had, rather than build a new one especially for the Games.

In order to convert Hampden Park into an athletics stadium, he hired The Structure Group to make a temporary floor, more suitable to running and long jump rather than football.

The Structure Group have a great reputation for building temporary structures for major sporting events in the UK – the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Great North Run for example – and so they were the natural choice.

How the temporary floor was built…

In order to construct a floor to meet the size requirements of the Commonwealth Games and the International Association of Athletics Federations, The Structure Group knew they would have to build a platform 1.9m above the existing pitch level. The diggers were sent in towards the end of 2013 to remove the turf, and steel beams and posts were then put into place, which were covered with special decking and then a suitable athletics track.

It was a huge project with over 18,000sqm of heavy deck, over 6000 steel stilts, and 2000 tons of steel components. It took nine months to complete and was ready well ahead of schedule, ready for the Commonwealth Games to open last week.

Joseph Ash Galvanizing are proud that The Structure Group asked us to galvanize the jack heads that sit on top of the steel stilts and therefore to be a part of this project. We have hot dip galvanized steel components for The Structure Group for a number of years and it’s great to work on projects that contribute to events such as the Commonwealth Games.

The Structure Group

The Structure Group is a world leader in the supply of temporary elevated decks and structures. The company was forged around its leading product, the TSG HeavyDeck system. This steel framed, panel system boasts a weight loading capacity of up to20kN / sqm. and allows TSG to specialise in the provision of temporary stadium conversions, sporting arenas, showrooms, grandstands and temporary structures.

Problems with steel transportation? Working to tight deadlines? We can help.

For steel projects that require transportation contact any Joseph Ash plant as we’ll not only arrange collection and delivery to and from your workplace, but we‘ll also deliver your steel to end user sites after it has been treated by us.

Our Walsall plant is particularly equipped to manage these logistics as we have a very large transportation fleet available for utilisation.

If you are also working to very tight deadlines, we can help with overnight turnarounds too. Call us, tell us your requirements and we’ll send a lorry out to collect your steel. We can then hot dip galvanize it within a short period of time (and shot blast and powder coat it too from our Medway plant if required) and deliver it back to your plant, or to its final destination.

To give you an idea of timeframes, if you contacted our Walsall plant we can normally collect, treat and deliver steel projects in Bristol, Stroud and Gloucester within 24 hours, or Derby within 48 hours.

At Joseph Ash we like to make our customers’ lives as easy as possible, and transportation and overnight turnarounds really helps!

Clay Architecture wins prestigious RIBA award for Medway Crematorium project.

MGC – a Joseph Ash plant in Medway – and Hellings Fabrications Ltd are pleased to have been part of the project.

Clay Architecture in Gravesend was chosen by Medway Council in 2013 to redesign and rebuild part of Medway Crematorium in Chatham, in order to house new fuel efficient cremation ovens. It was a great choice by Medway Council as Clay Architecture has recently won the prestigious regional RIBA award for their work.

As part of the project, Clay Architecture asked Hellings Fabrications Ltd to build a two tonne window screen, which Hellings then asked MGC – a Joseph Ash plant in Medway – to hot dip galvanize and powder coat. The screen is a beautiful addition to the redesigned crematorium and MGC are very proud to have been part of its production.

The screen was designed by Clay Architecture to sit in front of the crematorium’s chapel window in order to provide privacy for families attending cremations. It was also designed to let in natural sunlight, whilst at the same time preventing glare from the morning and evening sun.

It is a complex structure with many intricate sections designed to sympathetically suit the existing patterns on the crematorium’s windows.

Hellings managed the fabrication from their Margate workshop, and MGC then galvanized and powder coated it from their Medway plant. Because it is so large – measuring 5.8 metres high by 4.7 metres wide – it had to be fabricated and galvanized in four parts.

When the structure was ready, MGC transported it to Medway Crematorium, where Hellings erected it on site, using special lifting equipment.

Clay Architecture was shortlisted for the RIBA prize along with six other sites in Kent. We’re really pleased they won, as the redesign of Medway Crematorium is stunning piece of architecture.

CE Marking of fabricated steel – will you be compliant with the new regulations by 1 July 2014?

As of 1 July 2014 all fabricated steel products that are supplied to a construction project must display the new CE Marking as per the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). If this is not something you have yet thought about, please start looking into it because from 1 July 2014 main contractors will only appoint steel contractors with the appropriate CE certification.

The certification process can take many months, so start this today if you do not want to miss out on business or large contracts after June.

For more information about the new CE Marking please call us at Joseph Ash and ask for the Technical Support Team. You can also call:

We are pleased to report that Joseph Ash Galvanizing has acquired the Sales and Logistics operation of a galvanizing plant in Tividale which will, from today, operate out of the Joseph Ash galvanizing site at Brineton Street, Walsall.  The company who has sold part of their collection and delivery service – Arkinstall – will only produce galvanizing from their Digbeth plant.

As Joseph Ash Galvanizing continues to grow, organically and through acquisitions, it is pleased to be able to offer additional sales and transport operations which will benefit existing Arkinstall Tividale customers, as well as Joseph Ash customers in the region.

Brian Finch, Sales Director at Joseph Ash Galvanizing said: “The acquisition went through smoothly and we are thrilled to be adding further operations to Joseph Ash’s services. In order to provide further confidence and continuity of service to existing Tividale customers who have used Arkinstall’s collection and delivery service in the past, we can confirm that the current Arkinstall vehicle fleet and drivers are transferring to Joseph Ash Walsall. Additionally, we are delighted that amongst others, the main service contacts Paul Hudson, Dawn Popple and Buta Uppal will also be transferring from Arkinstall to join the existing customer service team at Walsall. This will ensure a seamless transition and support existing relationships.”

Finch continues: “This latest acquisition is great news for Joseph Ash customers, and also presents some good opportunities for existing Arkinstall Tividale customers. It’s a great way to start bringing 2013 to a close.”
